Description

This striking iron-glazed tea ceremony bowl by Wada Tōzan was fired at Ōizumi-gama - the Wada family's wood-burning noborigama climbing kiln.  At 1,250°C (2,300°F) degrees, it was blasted with wave after wave of intense heat and ash, each one adding subtle tonal variations to the molten glaze.  While cooling in the kiln, the iron content (tetsu-yū) oxidizes, forming an obsidian landscape permanently marked by the dynamics inside Ōizumi-gama.

When filled with matcha, the verdant color of the tea strikes a beautiful harmony with its lustrous black surrounding, transforming this piece into a stunning panorama - like a hidden pond in the twilight.
