Description
In this striking tea ceremony bowl by Ikai Yūichi, we can see the influence of his mentor, the late Uichi Shimizu (1926-2004), whose exemplary work in iron and ash glazes garnered him the title of Living National Treasure in 1985.
The bowl is done in Ikai's signature hakuyūsai - a simple rice straw ash glaze which is applied over an iron-rich slip. While in the kiln, gravity guides the molten ash toward the center of the bowl to reveal the darker underlayer. The end result is an icy panorama of some distant, snow covered mountain. When filled with the verdant color of whipped matcha green tea, the wintry microcosm becomes complete.
A wooden presentation box will be custom made to order and signed by the artist. Delivery time for this item is 2 weeks.
