Description
Oribé is a style of pottery named after feudal lord and tea master Furuta Oribé (1545-1615). He was the student of the legendary Sen No Rikyū, who pioneered the quiet, Zen-inspired tea ceremony bowls called Raku. Oribe's style, however, was a dramatic visual departure from that of his teacher's, emphasizing asymetrical shapes, brisk brushwork, and figurative images of nature alongside free-flowing, dark copper greens.
