Description
For over 35 years, Sawada Hiroyuki has specialized in the production of ceramic ware made especially for tea ceremony. One of his areas of expertise and personal delights is the making of incense holders, or kōgō. For they not only challenge him to work in miniature, but they allow for all kinds of self-expression. This playful piece is skillfully formed as an ox (ushi) - the symbol of enlightenment.
Kōgō are used to hold powdered incense and are displayed in the alcove of a tea room. They are also used to hold small, personal treasures, and it is no surprise that kōgō have quite a following among collectors around the world who appreciate their diversity and, among other things, portability when traveling.
